Hey kids! Let’s all learn about the law!
What are the possible outcomes of a criminal trial in the US?
Well, there are several possible outcomes!
1. Dropped Charges is one. The prosecutor may drop the charges against you, in which case you are free to go.
2. Guilty Plea. You admitted that you did it! Good on you, for saving everyone a lot of time and effort. Good luck with the sentencing phase!
3. You can receive a Guilty Verdict. This is a lot like a Guilty Plea, but you wasted everybody’s time.
4. You can receive a Not Guilty Verdict. You’re free to go!
5. Mistrial. Something went wrong in the process such that the trial doesn’t count. Maybe the prosecutor will ask for a do-over, maybe he won’t No takesies-backsies!
But you can’t be found innocent?
No, and the judge will so instruct you if you ask him.
But what about a Grand Jury?
They can either decide to
1. Indict, or
2. Not Indict
a criminal suspect.
Does this all apply to a special prosecutor / special counsel / independent counsel?
Yup!
But you didn’t mention:
1. finding the suspect innocent, or
2. exoneration, or
3. cleared
by the grand jury / special counsel / trial. CAn’t they do that?
No.
Then why would the news keep telling me they didn’t do a thing they can’t do anyway?
Maybe because the people you think are informing you are actually misinforming you on purpose?
Maybe?
Ya think?
